The Association Culturelle Franco-Anglaise Aquitaine was brought into existence, under an association statute of 1901, on 21st July 1992 by Philip Rodger, a Scot living in Eymet.
The full title is Association Culturelle Franco-Anglaise Aquitaine Europ’Art Expo. Its aims are to develop rapport between the French and British residents in the region and provide joint cultural and social activities.
The first two years of its existence were dedicated to art and enabled those just getting off the ground, and more experienced artists, to get together with professionals and show their own work. Following the second year the association was under the presidency of Catherine Smith-Clarke who continued the artistic leaning but after she left to return to England in 1995 Michel Mezin became the president. Wishing to extend the range of activities a choir was inaugurated in 1996 with Eileen Earnshaw the conductor. It was at this time the French language lessons were introduced for one class of diligent students. The year after Susan Blomley founded the first English class with Alma Downs joining in 1998 to take a second class. Dee Smith took over from Susan in 2000. Also a second French class was started. In addition social activities, such as concerts, quizzes, picnics and visits of touristy interest took place. The membership had then risen from the original twenty or so up to more than 150.
Under the presidency of Susan Blomley from 2003 to 2006 membership had risen to more than 300. The number of students in language classes rose to 140 with 7 classes in French led by Françoise Peyre, Philippa Tillyer, Liliane and Jacques Bureau, André Burriez, Hélène Prik and Michel Mézin. 3 English classes were led by Ella Pratt, Dawn Weaver Sarah Browning and Susan Blomley. A painting workshop was run by Jackie Shapland and Graham Taylor and the choir rose to 45 under the direction of Richard Errington. In 2005 the membership had risen to more than 300.
In 2005 a web site for the Association was created by Ron Tillyer and in 2006 Bob Wilson was elected president. Unfortunately Bob Wilson had to retire early during the season 2007/8 and the vice-president, Ron Tillyer took on Bob’s duties. Ron was the elected president for 2008/9 and 2009/10.
